Just Desserts: Karma Cream

Karma Cream
1025 West University Avenue

Five Thumbs Up!

Menu Highlights: Everything here is great

Karma Cream is brilliant for many reasons. First off, it's a business professor's dream model (finding an untapped market and providing a high quality product-vegan ice cream/desserts). Second, it's locally owned and operated (the owners, Kyle and Payal, started out as the only workers, enduring 24 hour days for a while). Third, and most importantly, it's absolutely delicious!

They have two coolers, one vegan & one dairy based, both full of unique flavors such as lemon cookie, vanilla honey lavender, cardamom.

An added bonus is that all items (including free samples) are served in non disposable bowls with metal spoons. They do their best to reduce waste in every way possible.

I'm not a big advocate of vegan cooking, especially when it comes to dessert. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that "vegan dessert" is an oxymoron. But Karma Cream manages to rise above the usual pasty, awkwardly soy based "treats" found elsewhere. In fact, the vegan ice creams are so good, you hardly notice they're not dairy based (my fav is pineapple).

Besides the ice creams, Karma Cream features some of the best vegan desserts you'll ever have. The desserts are literal works of art and are constantly changing and evolving. Some days, you'll be tempted by the Chocolate Covered Pretzel cupcake (It's a chocolate cupcake filled with salted pretzel pieces and chocolate fudge swirl, topped with dark chocolate ganache). Other days will feature Lemon Blueberry, Cafe con Leche, Kahlua Mudslide, or Almond Joy cupcakes. Don't believe me? Check these photos out!

As with the vegan ice cream, you'll be hard pressed to find someone complaining that the vegan baked goods are lacking anything in the taste department.

They also serve a vegan reuben pressed sandwich that is out of this world.

To wash everything down, they serve a great assortment of coffees and organic beers/ciders.

Bottom Line: Karma Cream is a great place to get a hand crafted, made with love work of art for dessert. The owners truly care about their product and their customers. By focusing on organic products and environmental sustainability, Karma Cream's ethic is refreshing well beyond its frozen treats.
